Riot Grrrl Kathleen Hanna? She was in Bikini Kill, right? A lot of my highschool years were taken up with listening to Bikini Kill tapes and cds. I listened to them again recently, and they sound just as badass and awesome as they did years ago.
I missed out on the whole Riot Grrrl movement. I wasn't ready for it until about 1996, and by then I guess they went under the radar. There are still aspects of it that strike me as "angry college sophomore who's trying out lesbianism because it's hip and political and uses words like 'hegemony' and gases about on soap boxes" about it, but I guess Bikini Kill seems less cartoonish to me. Though I can't say for sure until I learn more about it.
I get that sort of trying the angry stance from Riot Grrl a bit too, but I think deep down it's cool because they tell girls it's okay to be pissed off that life is so much easier for dudes, and that gender roles need to be questioned. Cuz man, these Miley Cyrus things are so depressing. And all that Girls Gone Wild biznass. Yuck.
This is true. If there were more Riot Grrrls in the world, maybe I'd have fewer friends who suck balls (ahem, above post).
