Yamashiro, Hollywood

Tonight my family dined at the Casa Bonita of Japanese restaurants for some birthday celebrations. (Casa Bonita is the Disneyland of Mexican restaurants.) It was awesome. It had a view and a garden and good food, and reasonably priced sushi. My only complaint would be the small portions, but then a restaurant couldn't be upscale unless it left you feeling a little bit ripped off.

Two thoughts:

1) Where is this wondrous place of which you speak?

2) Small portions != Casa Bonita.

One of the best things about Casa Bonita, even better than the mariachi bands and indoor volcanos for a little fat kid, is the little flag on each table. If you run out of chips or something you just raise the miniature Mexican flag and soon all your problems are solved. But then I guess the Japanese theme calls for a different approach.

Dammit, now I'm hungry for both Sushi and Burritos.

Pughd speaks the truth about the table flags. Did he/she grow up in Colorado as well??

But, I'd say that the the small portions observation isn't quite right. TERRIBLE portions, yes- the melted cheese, for isntance, constitutes an entirely new food group: plastics. But I recall that there was always LOTS of that plastic sprayed over heaps of prison-grade taco meat.

No I didn't grow up in Colorado. I grew up in Kansas making Colorado vacation destination #1.

The Casa Bonita cheese-like substance is enshrined in my typology of Mexican-style food. "Colorado Mexican" refers to that stuff you get at restaurants with names like "La Margarita." The primary characteristic of Colorado Mexican is a thick layer of yellow petrol-based cheze covering everything on your plate. Tasty stuff IMHO, but not really food.

What?? I didn't know Casa Bonita was real. I only know about it through South Park. Are there really cliff divers there?

I don't remember any cliff divers, but I was last there when I was approximately Eric Cartman's age and size. The restaurant is divided into themed rooms that have fake palm trees, volcanoes, pyramids, and a water fall as I recall. There were also mariachis and other performers so *maybe* the have a cliff diver at the water fall once in a while.

I vote that one of us who hasn't already gotten it applies for Rackham discretionary money so that we can all take a 'research' trip to Denver.

I've already discussed this with Rex over AIM, but: yes, there are indeed cliff divers. They have this whole routine, and they perform like every hour, on the hour, or something like that. Also real: Black Bart's Cave, the 19th century mexican prison cell photo op place, Mariachi bands, an arcade, and generally lotsa fun stuff for the wee ones.
