Fellini

I will never find
Trevi nymphs - life from dream. I
must build the sculptures.

I'm drawn to this scene because it gives form to the hope that somewhere, in some time, we might finally find that thing we yearn for and search for: the sweet life. Here, Silvia and the Trevi Fountain are the sweet life. We don't recognize it as such when we see it, and we don't know what to do with it when it comes to us; and when we reach out to touch it, it turns to stone beneath our fingertips. But Fellini gives us a constructed facsimile of the sweet life so that I can believe it exists. I suspect that if I ever find it on my own, it will only be because I built it myself, like Fellini did.
